FHPSNN Builds for a Community in Need
November 10, 2010
Students of Mildred C. Osborne School celebrated the ground breaking ceremony of their new campus on November 4, 2010. The new construction is to replace the previous school which was damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
This new, $21.3 million, 95,000 SF, school is being constructed by FHPSNN and is scheduled to open in 2012. The previous school, which was demolished earlier this year, was closed due to flooding of well over 10 feet of water. The students of the previous school were transferred to another campus and have been attending classes in trailers for the past 5 years while waiting for their new school to be built. Once complete, Osborne will house up to 400 children in grades pre-kindergarten through eighth and will contain classrooms, computer and science labs, music and art rooms, cafeteria, and a gymnasium.
Designed to achieve LEED Silver by the U.S. Green Building Council, the school is currently pursuing LEED Certification and emphasizes natural lighting through curtainwalls and specialty pavement. In addition to the “green” features, it also will be constructed 3 ft. above the existing grade to satisfy current flood zone requirements as well as storm-front glazing which is hurricane resistant.
Research reports that the property damage from Hurricane Katrina was estimated at over $81 billion. Osborne School is the first of eight new schools to be constructed across New Orleans and is part of the Recovery School District of Louisiana’s Master Plan. The ground breaking ceremony was featured on the New Orleans Fox Channel 8 News, click here for more information and to see the full story.
