Calumet Primary Settling Tanks
June 1, 2010
FHPSNN has joint ventured with IHC Construction Company to provide construction services for a new Preliminary Treatment Facility at the Calumet Water Reclamation Plant for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. This $230 million project is phase two of the major facility upgrade at the plant and part of an overall roughly $500 million construction program at the facility.
Construction of phase two includes an enclosed grit building with eight new aerated grit chambers, grit removal, dewatering systems and equipment, associated mechanical and electrical facilities, and service tunnels and connections. The grit building concrete is nearly complete. Precast roofing and masonry are scheduled to begin in the coming weeks.
Construction also includes twelve new 155-feet diameter, cast in place reinforced concrete, circular primary settling tanks and all associated sludge collection rake arms and drive mechanisms, scum removal equipment, inboard effluent weirs, and connecting piping for influent, effluent, sludge and scum removal. All twelve tanks have been placed with only minor concrete remaining to complete the structures. Several interconnecting service tunnels have also been completed and will serve as galleries for piping and electrical conduits.
Four new tunnel access pump stations (TAPS buildings) along the new service tunnels have been constructed on top of the service tunnels and provide locations for access to the tunnels through stairwells. All of the concrete work is complete for these TAPS structures and the superstructures are in progress, with two structures nearly complete. Construction of two new 96-inch force mains, extending to the new grit building from the phase one pump building was completed earlier this year. Later in the project new roads around the new primary settling tanks and grit removal facilities will be placed. Existing roads will be reconstructed and associated grading and site improvements will be provided.
The overall project is roughly 70% complete. Roughly 70,000 cubic yards of concrete and over 13,000,000 pounds of concrete reinforcement have been placed since the project broke ground in February of 2009. Project completion is anticipated in late 2011.
