Customer Testimonials

F.H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen has extensive experience with recreation type projects. We are accustomed to working in an inconspicuous manner when the surroundings are occupied to preserve the enjoyment of the public visitor. Maintaining the schedule is also critical so the public can receive full enjoyment of the area/facility as soon as possible.

We have a long-standing relationship with the Chicago Park District and have completed a wide variety of projects from a driving range to ice rink and fountains to pools. We have also worked for several suburban park districts and schools constructing pools, parks, field houses, etc.

Carlson Cottage Restoration
Chicago, Illinois

The Carlson Cottage at Lincoln Park Zoo was originally constructed in 1888 with an addition added around 1908. The historic building was in need of a complete interior and exterior renovation.

All existing interior floors including concrete, walls, ceilings, HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, were removed followed by the installation of all new concrete floor slabs, linoleum flooring, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and walls with decorative wood work. The exterior work consisted of complete demolition and reconstruction to match the original historic design of the cottage. This historical restoration included a new masonry chimney, new custom doors and windows, complete removal of the asphalt shingles and reinstallation with cedar shingles, along with custom made roof ornaments, steel gutters/downspouts and custom radiused masonry bricks to repair damaged sections of the historic walls. Miscellaneous exterior work also included repairs to stucco, replacement of rotted historic trim, a complete re-build and painting of the soffit, new sidewalks, as well as hardscaping and landscaping around the building.

Children's Fountain
Chicago, Illinois

Previously located on Wacker Drive, FHPSNN relocated and installed the Children's Fountain to the corner of North Avenue and Clark Street. Prior to installation at the new location, a new foundation, bowl and pedestal were built while the fountain was sent to Georgia to be refinished.

Upon its return, the fountain was reinstalled along with the existing granite slabs that surrounded it. The fountain is approximately 30 feet in diameter and stands approximately 30 feet high.

Jorndt Field
Chicago, Illinois

This Field House Renovation was funded by the former/retired CEO of Walgreen’s in honor of his father, hence the name "Jorndt Field." The field house is located in Winnemac Park and consisted of exterior and interior renovations. The exterior work was quite extensive and included demolition of the existing press boxes and concession stand and replacement with a prefab metal structure from Italy, which has plumbing and electric run to it. A ticket booth was also added as well as new fencing, landscaping work, concrete benches, & planters.

A major overhaul was also done on the exterior masonry of both grandstands as well as adding a masonry structure atop one for the new press box. A new scoreboard was installed. New field goal posts were installed. Limestone insets were added with the “Jorndt Field” name. Exterior lighting was replaced/added. A new sound system was installed. Windows and doors were replaced. The interior renovations included replacing metal ceilings, installing new lockers and benches, all new plumbing fixtures, as well as an electrical upgrade. An old tractor garage was also completely gutted and renovated into an official’s locker room.

Lane Tech High School Stadium
Chicago, Illinois

After receiving a grant from the NFL/LISC Grassroots Program and the Chicago Public Schools, the renovation of Lane Tech High School’s 65 year old Staduim was initiated.

FHPSNN was awarded the $1.7 million dollar project that included the removal of the entire grass football field and the cinder running track followed by the construction of a new synthetic rubber/sand filled football field and a synthetic NCAA qualified running track along with javelin, shot put, discus, long jump and steeple chase areas. Soccer and Lacrosse will also be played on the new field.

The first home game and opening ceremony for the Stadium was attended by Chicago Bears' players, defensive end Adewale Ogunleye and linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo; Michael McCaskey, Chairman of the Board for the Chicago Bears; Andrew Mooney, Senior Program Directors for LISC/Chicago; and Rufus Williams, President of the Chicago Board of Education.

Stevenson Park Pool
Burbank, Illinois

This project consisted of building a new wading pool, zero depth to two feet, which included play features such as tumble buckets, water and ground jets, and a sand play area. In addition, we completely renovated the 4,000 sf. bathhouse for ADA compliance and reconfigured the landscaping and concrete decks around the main pool. Funbrellas and a trellis were scattered around the deck to provide shade in areas around the pool. A new mechanical system was also installed for the wading pool and bathhouse.

West Campus Recreation Center
Chicago, Illinois

This complex project for the University of Illinois - Chicago included the removal of an existing planter and associated site concrete work above an existing natatorium. A new three-story addition was constructed above the natatorium, which includes a structural steel skeleton that utilizes the existing arched concrete beams of the natatorium roof structure. The addition was mainly constructed of storefront and pre-formed architectural panels as well as masonry to match the existing recreational facility. The second floor of the addition is cantilevered to create a covered walk for pedestrian traffic. The interior of the building consists of drywall partitions with an open floor plan for fitness equipment.

The new addition will be connected to the existing recreational facility, which will also undergo finish renovations. This area will receive new performance flooring, curtains, wood flooring, and sports equipment. The existing facility will also receive new locker rooms and shower facilities as well as MEP upgrades including a new fire sprinkler system.

York Commons
Elmhurst, Illinois

This project began with the demolition of the existing pool York Commons Pool. The new concrete pool contains a new mechanical system of pumps and filters and features a zero depth shallow end, a water slide, diving board, water cannons, mushroom-shaped fountains, and sprayers. A sand playground connects to the new pool with a shower tower.

After digging 9-1/2 feet down for the diving well, which was supposed to be 12 feet deep, excavators hit an underground spring that kept filling the hole. To stabilize the soil, we installed plumbing and lateral drainage sheet piling and a "well point system" in addition to making steel support modifications. Work was then able to resume and the project was completed on schedule.
