F.H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen has completed correctional and public safety facilities, both new construction and renovation. New facilities require state-of-the-art communications and surveillance systems for monitoring the safety of the community inside and outside of the building. When renovating these types of occupied facilities, coordination and communication among all team members is critical to ensure the safety of all.

10th District Police Station
Chicago, Illinois

The 10th District Chicago Police Department, built for the Public Building Commission of Chicago, is a 44,000 square foot two-level building located at the corner of Ogden and Kedzie on the West side of Chicago. The new station will replace the current Marquette District Police Station built in 1917 at 2259 S. Damen Avenue. The construction of this prototype design is mostly steel and masonry with multiple large curtainwalls.

Some of the main finishes of this project include burnished block, plaster and drywall, acoustical ceilings, security ceilings, tile carpeting, resilient flooring, sports flooring, and terrazzo flooring. Within the terrazzo flooring is community-inspired artwork that is unique to this structure.

This building consists of a community room for group functions such as CAPS (Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy,) secure viewing and line-up room to protect crime victims and witnesses, separate entrances for prisoners, video arraignment room, and a fitness room for officers and personnel. Additionally inside this building will be electronic security consoles for monitoring security, a fiber optics network for 9-1-1, telephones, computers, and finally a “Quiet Room” where officers can relieve stress and receive counseling after a traumatic situation.
