FHPSNN Named Merit Award Finalist for Renovation of Chicago’s Lindblom Technical High School
F.H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen (FHPSNN) was named a finalist for a 2006 Merit Award in the “Rehab Construction” category for the complete renovation of the Robert Lindblom Technical High School. Each year, the Chicago Building Congress (CBC) presents four Merit Awards honoring outstanding projects within the Chicago metropolitan area from the previous two years. The $16.2 million renovation of the four-story, 333,000 square foot facility was the largest renovation project ever undertaken for a Chicago public school.

The Lindblom renovation project was a key component of an overall revitalization strategy for part of the Englewood community on Chicago’s southwest side. Renovations include thirty-nine general purpose classrooms, a science classroom, two science labs, computer lab, learning lab, fitness room, girls locker room, greenhouse, 1,700 seat, four level auditorium, library, two gymnasiums, swimming pool, fourteen toilet rooms, administrative offices, book store, and health service offices.

FHPSNN’s work on the project was impacted at its start when mechanical and electrical infrastructure upgrades to be fulfilled by another contractor fell behind schedule. FHPSNN accelerated its construction schedule to absorb this impact and completed the project, ahead of schedule in September 2005.

Angels in Hard Hats

Golfers from throughout the Midwest converged on the Grand Geneva Hotel in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin last week to participate in the 10th Annual Angels in the Fairway Golf Outing. The event was sponsored by Joey’s Angels, a chapter of the Leukemia Research Foundation. Joey’s Angels was founded in 1996 by Larry and Patty Mix, whose 3 year-old son, Joey, died from leukemia. With the help of friends and family members, and corporate support from F.H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen, the Mixes launched Joey’s Angels as a way to turn their sorrow into something positive and to help other families.

Each year, the outing has grown in size and this year’s 10th anniversary outing brought Joey’s Angels to a new fundraising milestone. The 2006 Angels in the Fairway Golf Outing raised $140,000 for a ten-year total of more than $1,300,000 for the Leukemia Research Foundation. The LRF was established in 1946 to raise much-needed funds for research and is made up of more than 2000 volunteers in 24 local chapters who have joined together to raise funds in the fight against leukemia.

“We started out as just a group of friends and family who wanted to do something to help,” said founder, Larry Mix, a Senior Project Manager who has been a part of the Paschen team for more than 20 years. “Now, through the support of so many people of good will, we have been able to really raise money that we know will do so much to help in the fight against Leukemia. Joey would be proud to know that his life has touched so many others.”

"Haulin' Away Hunger"

F.H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen joined BLDD Architects for the 2007 Canstruction competition to benefit the Greater Chicago Food Depository. This unique event combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a goal to help feed hungry people. Participating teams, lead by architects and engineers, display their talents by creating sculptures made entirely out of canned foods. After the competition and exhibition all of the food used in the structures is donated to local food banks for distribution to pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, elderly and day care centers. Over 75 Canstruction events are held around the country each year to raise more than 2,000,000 lbs. of food for local relief agencies. All of the canned good used in this year’s Canstruction exhibits represent a donation of approximately $60,000 to the Food Depository.

Corporate sponsorships and donations, such as F.H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen’s, further the Greater Chicago Food Depository's Canstruction project mission to help feed the hungry.

St. Michael’s Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

On Wednesday, February 20, 2008, students, faculty, and staff of St. Michael Parish School in Wheaton gathered for the ribbon cutting of their new elevator. Father Don E. McLaughlin led the dedication ceremony and each class was able to visit the elevator and to say a brief prayer. Trucks were staged outside so the construction debris could be immediately removed with out affecting day to day operations,” Frank Mullaghy, Project Manager said. “We also coordinated with Al Raby and CNT to recycle manageable pieces of the concrete pavement to be used to construct walkways in each garden.”

FHPSNN Receives Leukemia Research Foundation's Highest Honor

F.H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen is the 2007 recipient of the Star of the Year Award, presented by the Glenview, Illinois-based Leukemia Research Foundation (LRF). The Star of the Year Award is the highest honor bestowed upon corporations or individuals by the LRF. F.H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen is only the 21st recipient of this honor in the more than 60-year history of the LRF.

The general contracting firm has been the Presenting Sponsor of Angels in the Fairway, one of the country’s largest charity golf outings, organized by the Joey’s Angels Chapter of the LRF for more than 10 years – helping the Chapter to raise more than $1.4 million in net revenue to find the cause of and cure for leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers. F.H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen’s involvement came in support of one of its own employees, Larry Mix, cofounder of the Joey’s Angels Chapter and father of Joey Mix, his son who died from leukemia at the age of three in 1996, for whose memory the Chapter was founded.

The Star of the Year Award was created as the Leukemia Research Foundation’s top acknowledgement, its highest honor of respect and gratitude presented to a select few who have enabled the Foundation to reach for the stars. Larry’s coworkers all felt tremendous sorrow when Joey died. F.H. Paschen stepped up to serve as the presenting sponsor of the golf outing as a way to turn the sorrow into something positive to help other families.

“I’m honored to accept the Star of the Year Award on behalf of F.H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen and our employees, as well as our subcontractors and suppliers that support the event,” said Joe Scarpelli, executive vice president for F.H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen.

“The bottom line is that we’re working to find a cure for leukemia, in support of our fellow employee Larry Mix and his family, so that other parents will not experience the loss of a child to this disease; but the real star is that brave little boy Joey Mix,” Scarpelli said.

The Star of the Year Award was presented at the LRF’s Medical Awards Dinner Saturday, June 30 in Rosemont, IL.
