Golfers from throughout the Midwest converged on the Grand Geneva Hotel in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin last week to participate in the 10th Annual Angels in the Fairway Golf Outing. The event was sponsored by Joey’s Angels, a chapter of the Leukemia Research Foundation. Joey’s Angels was founded in 1996 by Larry and Patty Mix, whose 3 year-old son, Joey, died from leukemia. With the help of friends and family members, and corporate support from F.H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen, the Mixes launched Joey’s Angels as a way to turn their sorrow into something positive and to help other families.
Each year, the outing has grown in size and this year’s 10th anniversary outing brought Joey’s Angels to a new fundraising milestone. The 2006 Angels in the Fairway Golf Outing raised $140,000 for a ten-year total of more than $1,300,000 for the Leukemia Research Foundation. The LRF was established in 1946 to raise much-needed funds for research and is made up of more than 2000 volunteers in 24 local chapters who have joined together to raise funds in the fight against leukemia.
“We started out as just a group of friends and family who wanted to do something to help,” said founder, Larry Mix, a Senior Project Manager who has been a part of the Paschen team for more than 20 years. “Now, through the support of so many people of good will, we have been able to really raise money that we know will do so much to help in the fight against Leukemia. Joey would be proud to know that his life has touched so many others.”
